Susan F. Moses |
From light-drenched landscapes to vibrant studies of geraniums in late-summer bloom, Susan Moses’ paintings express her love of nature, passion for color and composition, and 2O years of art and teaching experience. Sue began painting in childhood, and was encouraged by her mother. Painting together on location, mother and daughter captured Pennsylvania skylines, streams, and bridges. Years later, it was water scenes of the East Coast and the New York Finger Lakes that inspired her art, as did the lives of her busy family. Sue earned her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1976, while teaching art and shop in Maryland’s public schools. During her 15-year teaching career, she specialized in creating silver jewelry, batik, and watercolor, exhibiting and selling her works to the public. Later, as a full-time mom during the 1980s and ‘90s, she refined her watercolor skills, studying with local artists and taking college courses. Today, with her children grown, Sue has resumed her intense focus on her art. She has steadily gained local attention, winning Best-in-Show awards at the 2005 Kensington Labor Day Festival, and at the 2002 Chevy Chase Women’s Club Art Show. An accomplished sketch artist, Sue credits her art training for the strong compositions that belie her paintings. A fan of realism and plein air techniques, she feels a strong need to paint outdoors whenever possible, and even tolerates Mother Nature’s extremes, to capture the right effects of color and light. “I prefer to paint on location…to be right out there in the elements,” she says. Sue points to artists Firouzeh Sadeghi, Walt Bartman, and Ross Merrill, as her inspirations. She has studied extensively under watercolorist Skip Lawrence, and currently trains with local artist Martha Siegel. Workshops with other artists include Margaret Martin, Carolyn Grosse Garawercki, Karen Vernon, Linda Kemp, Joseph Stoddard, and Tom Lynch, Sue’s work has been featured in juried shows and exhibits throughout Maryland, from Brookside Gardens and Glenview Mansion Art Gallery, to Strathmore Hall. Her professional memberships include The Montgomery County Art Association, Strathmore Hall Arts Center, and the Rockville Art League. Her pen and ink drawings of nearly two dozen public and display gardens are featured in “Maryland’s Great Gardens” (1993, with co-author Nancy Zastrow). Sue is represented by the Tidewater Gallery in Swansboro, NC. “I love the challenge of playing with a mix of colors and a puddle of water, to create an image.” All of the following paintings are watercolors. She also does commissions. Contact: mmoses4@verizon.net |
